I am still in awe as I sit down to write this. What a journey it has been! I am beyond thrilled to share with you that in August, which is International Women’s Month, I won the Womandla Women in STEAM Award! This is not just a personal victory but a win for every young African woman with a dream, for everyone who’s ever believed in the power of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics to change the world.
From Finalist to Winner: Reflecting on the Journey
I wrote about being a finalist just a few weeks ago and was deeply honoured. Even then, I knew that the recognition alone was a milestone worth celebrating. But now, to have won—it feels surreal! It’s hard to describe what it means to stand on this platform with so many other incredible women who are making waves in STEAM. Each one is an inspiration, and I am grateful to be counted among them.
When I started Ulwazi Scientific Communications and STEM Research, my vision was to create a bridge between science and society, to make knowledge accessible, and to highlight African contributions to global science. Winning this award shows that the work we’re doing—whether it’s ocean science development, policy advising, or representing South Africa internationally is making an impact.
Why This Award Matters
The Womandla Women in STEAM Award is more than just a title; it’s a symbol of progress for women in spaces where we’ve historically been underrepresented. It’s about breaking barriers and showing the world that women—especially African women—are at the forefront of innovation and leadership in science and beyond. We belong here, we are capable, and we are thriving.
I want this win to be a reminder to every young girl interested in STEAM fields that there’s a place for you. Whether you dream of exploring the ocean’s depths or inventing the next groundbreaking technology, know that your voice matters and your dreams are valid.
A Thank You to My Community
This win is not mine alone. I owe so much to the amazing team at Ulwazi, my family, friends, and mentors who have walked this path with me. To every collaborator, every student, and every young person I’ve had the honour of mentoring—this is for us. Together, we are creating ripples that will transform into waves of change.
A special shoutout to the Womandla Foundation for their incredible work in supporting women across STEAM disciplines. Your platform has allowed women like me to shine, and I am forever grateful for your dedication.
Looking Ahead
Winning this award fills me with even more determination to keep pushing boundaries. So much work is ahead—expanding our scientific communications initiatives, continuing to influence ocean science policies, and using fashion through M’Afrika by Kolisa to celebrate African heritage and identity. But this moment is a powerful reminder that every step forward matters. We are making a difference.
To everyone who has supported me, believed in me, or simply followed my journey—thank you. A special thank you to Thuli Mkhaliphi who agreed to represent me at the awards. I did not think I would win and almost did not send her my two minute acceptance speech that she had to read. This is our collective win, and I’m excited for what lies ahead.
Here’s to more milestones, more breakthroughs, and more women in STEAM!
With overflowing gratitude,
Dr. Kolisa Yola Sinyanya xxx
