Itβs official, Iβm in the running for the Nature Inspiring Women in Science: Science Outreach Award! Just writing that feels surreal!!! It’s Nature! Even at this stage, being recognised by Nature, one of the most prestigious scientific platforms globally, is a deeply affirming moment for me and everything Iβve poured into science communication, education, and outreach.

This award isnβt just about science. Itβs about how we share science, who we speak to, whose stories we tell, who gets to be seen and heard, and how we make knowledge accessible and transformative beyond the walls of academia. Thatβs the heart of what I do since my PhD years and now at Ulwazi Scientific Communications and STEM Research, and itβs the core of my personal mission as a scientist, educator, and African woman in science.
To be considered for this award means that my work, rooted in African ocean science, postgraduate research support, storytelling, and breaking the βivory towerβ narrative, is being seen globally. It tells me that the tide is shifting. Science outreach that is community-rooted, culturally conscious, and intentionally inclusive is no longer on the sidelines; itβs being celebrated!
This nomination is not just a personal milestone. Itβs a win for every young African girl who dares to dream of a life in science. Itβs a moment of recognition for ocean science, for Black scientists, for interdisciplinary thinking, and for the radical idea that science is for everyone.
So whatβs next? I wait. And while I wait, Iβll keep doing what Iβve always done, making science more relatable, accessible, and human. Whether I walk away with the award or not, this moment is already a big deal.
Thank you to everyone who supports my work, engages with my content, and believes in this mission.
Letβs keep making waves. ππππππ
